Waste to Energy

Goal

Transform waste into energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Actions

  • Alternative Fuels: India Cements harnesses municipal waste, including solids, plastics, and other forms generated within municipalities, converting them into energy within our cement kilns. This approach helps mitigate the adverse effects of solid waste accumulation in landfills and also reduces the fossil fuel consumption.
  • Waste Utilization: We emphasize the use of a diverse range of alternative fuels over conventional carbon-emitting fossil fuels. We have devised several in house feeding arrangements for such fuels which are different to the traditional fossil fuels. We also use liquid alternate fuels wherever possible in our operations.
  • System Improvements: As part of our waste-to-energy initiatives, we have planned improvements to our existing alternate fuel feeding systems and will establish state-of-the-art feeding arrangements for efficient co-processing of solid wastes in all our plants.

Impact

  • In FY 2023-24, our alternate fuel usage improved 3x from the previous year. Infact, in FY 2023-24, we have generated energy from alternate fuel amounting to 28.4 TJ, up from 26.9 TJ in the previous year.
  • In FY 2023-24, we have achieved 7.2% reduction in traditional fossil fuel consumption per ton of clinker produced.
  • Our Tamil Nadu plants alone have replaced 4.1% of traditional fossil fuels.
